On Monday (September 18, 2023), Bonza announced the launch of new direct service between Gold Coast and Mount Isa starting December 5, 2023. The route will operate twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays with one-way fares now available for booking from $119 per person. Mount Isa becomes the airline’s 19th destination on their current route map, and marks Bonza’s ongoing commitment to regional Queensland. Bonza’s partnership with Queensland Airports Limited (QAL), which owns and operates three Bonza destinations, namely Gold Coast, Townsville and Mount Isa, was instrumental in securing the new route. Bonza’s Gold Coast base is expected to create over 100 direct jobs.

In Monday’s announcement, Bonza’s CEO, Tim Jordan, said,

“Affordable air travel has arrived in Mount Isa and we’re delighted to announce this new service linking the Gold Coast to Mount Isa. At Bonza, we’re about connecting more Aussies to their backyard than ever before and this new route will bring more tourists to Mount Isa from the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales region, while offering Mount Isa locals the opportunity to travel to the Goldie without it costing the earth. Connecting communities across Australia would not be possible without our airport partners, so we are grateful for QAL’s support to help us deliver low-cost fares for the many, not the few. We’re recruiting for pilots and cabin crew legends who will get to don our eye-catching ‘wear it your way’ uniform with pride and call the Gold Coast home – it doesn’t get more Bonza than that.”

Also commenting on the new route, Queensland Airports Limited’s Chief Executive Officer, Amelia Evans, added,

“The commencement of this direct service between the Gold Coast and Mount Isa is a testament to the ongoing efforts of our team and Bonza’s commitment to improving regional connectivity. Bonza's new connection offers a convenient and affordable option for travellers and contributes to a broader reduction in the cost of regional airfares. This announcement is not only a significant milestone for our group of airports, but also an important connection for the Mount Isa community and our State.”

Bonza is Australia’s new, and only independent low-cost carrier (LCC), enabling Australians to explore more of their own backyard at low prices. Bonza’s current route map includes three bases and 35 routes to 19 destinations. The airline currently operates a fleet of five brand new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, which will grow to eight by the end of the first year of operations. Over 90 percent of Bonza’s routes are not served by any airline, and 96 percent are not served by a low-cost carrier. The lowest fares are now available for booking on the FlyBonza App.
