Boeing and Etihad Airways Expand Sustainability Alliance to Drive Industry Innovation

At the Dubai Airshow today Boeing and Etihad Airways announced an expansion of their deep collaboration towards environmental goals. The expansion will focus on Etihad’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet and the development of sustainable operations across their network.

On Monday (November 15, 2021), Boeing announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Etihad Airways to expand the companies’ deep collaboration toward mutual environmental goals. The expansion builds on a 2019 sustainability partnership and will focus of the carrier’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet with the goal of developing sustainable operations across Etihad’s global network. Some of the initiatives in the agreement include enhancing the efficiency of navigation and flight operations, airframe technologies, and sustainable practices to reduce fuel use and emissions. Additionally, the partnership will provide an opportunity to validate concepts that could be scaled up to benefit the broader aviation industry.


In Monday’s announcement, Etihad Airways Group’s Chief Executive, Tony Douglas, said,


“Sustainability is a core principle at Etihad, and we believe our continued collaboration with Boeing will drive further innovation in this critical area for the airline and our industry. With the highly efficient 787 Dreamliner in our fleet, Etihad has considerably reduced its overall carbon emissions, and our expanded sustainability alliance with Boeing will drive further innovations.”


Also commenting on the expanded partnership, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ President and Chief Executive Officer, Stan Deal, said,


“Partnership is critically important to decarbonize our industry, and we are honored to work side-by-side with Etihad to advance sustainable aviation. Our flight test programs and other joint efforts have clearly demonstrated the value of collaboration by our companies and our industry.”

Etihad Airways is the largest Boeing 787 Dreamliner operator in the Middle East. The expanded partnership also includes collaboration to develop flight planning tools, arrival and departure procedures, en-route fight operation and community noise reduction. In support of operational efficiency, Boeing will provide multiple services for Etihad’s 787 fleet including charting and Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) navigation tools that provide pilots with real-time advisories to adjust course, altitude and speed, to optimize routing and fuel use. Additionally, the companies will collaborate on ways to reduce emissions at Etihad’s facilities, further the use of SAF and increase sustainable financing.
