On Thursday (October 20, 2022), Avelo Airlines announced that they will open a new base at Wilmington Airport (ILG) in Delaware from February 2023. Wilmington will be Avelo’s fourth base, joining Los Angeles’ Hollywood/Burbank Airport (BUR), Southern Connecticut’s Twee-New Haven Airport (HVN) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). The carrier has postponed previously announced plans to open a new base at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida due to the impact of Hurricane Ian on travel demand to the region. Initially, Avelo will launch five nonstop routes to Florida from their new Wilmington, Delaware base, including service to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Orlando (MCO), Tampa (TPA) and West Palm Beach (PBI). The carrier will initially base one Boeing 737NG at ILG.

In Thursday’s announcement, Avelo Airlines’ Chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, said,

“The Delaware Valley region wants and deserves more affordable, convenient and reliable air travel. Avelo was founded with a simple purpose – to Inspire Travel. Our very low fares and nonstop flights to five sun-soaked Florida destinations coupled with the fast and seamless experience at Wilmington Airport will make traveling easier than ever. We appreciate the warm reception and support Avelo is receiving from Delaware Governor John Carney, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer and so many other government and business leaders here. We look forward to welcoming everyone aboard Avelo’s first ILG flight in February.”

The Delaware Valley’s Wilmington Airport (ILG) offers a smooth and friendly alternative hometown airport experience. The airport is adjacently located to major highways, offering convenient access to guests traveling from the Delaware Valley region.

Avelo will offer a special inaugural flight between Wilmington Airport (ILG) and Orlando on Wednesday, February 1st, and effective February 3, 2023, the route will be operated three times weekly on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Service to Fort Lauderdale and Tampa will commence on February 2, 2023, with two weekly flights on each route, which will operate on Thursdays and Sundays. Twice weekly service to For Myers will begin on February 3, 2023, with flights on Mondays and Fridays, while flights between Wilmington, Delaware and West Palm Beach will commence on February 4, 2023, with two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
