On Thursday (July 18, 2024), Austrian Airlines announced that they will resume service between Linz and Frankfurt for the winter 2024/25 season.  Starting October 27, 2204, the route will initially operate three time per week with a 72-seat ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft operated by Austrian's partner Braathens Regional Airlines (BRA).

In Thursday’s announcement, Austrian Airlines’ CCO, Michael Trestl, said,

“As the red-white-red airline, it is very important to us that Upper Austria is reconnected with Europe and the world.  Efficient business travel is made possible via the Frankfurt hub. In addition, Upper Austrians can now reach many European and long-haul vacation destinations with ease.  We are delighted that we have reached this important milestone with Linz Airport and the state of Upper Austria and will be able to take off starting from the winter flight schedule.”

Also commenting on the resumption of Linz-Frankfurt service, Linz Airport’s Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Provincial Councilor, Markus Achleitner, said,

“Immediately after Lufthansa announced the suspension of the Linz-Frankfurt flight connection, we began talks with Austrian Airlines in order to achieve a rapid resumption of the connection between Linz Airport and Frankfurt.  During a meeting at the International Tourism Exchange in Berlin in March, I pointed out to Dr. Trestl that Linz Airport is indispensable as a central logistics hub for Upper Austria as a leading industrial and export state.  Many of our local companies maintain global business relationships and are dependent on a hub connection.  I am delighted that Austrian Airlines has agreed with this view and that the resumption of the Frankfurt connection has now been finally confirmed at a meeting with Dr. Trestl.  This ensures once again that business travelers from our federal state can travel quickly and comfortably to destinations around the world.”

Linz Airport’s Managing Director, Norbert Draskovits, added,

“We are delighted that Upper Austria is once again connected to the important Frankfurt hub and that we were able to win Austrian Airlines to take over the route.  It was important to us that Frankfurt is served three times a day in order to be able to cover as many connecting flights as possible.  As business travel has not yet returned to pre-crisis levels, it is also beneficial to serve the route with a high frequency but with a smaller aircraft.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa for the constructive and solution-oriented discussions that have made the resumption possible.”
