On Monday (April 5, 2021), American Airlines announced a month-long celebration of their AAdvantage loyalty program’s 40th anniversary. Members can participate in the celebration with the chance to win prizes instantly and receive special partner offers through an online game. AAdvantage was launched on May 1st, 1981 and was one of the industry’s first frequent flyer programs. The program continues to lead the way with innovative new partnerships and a more personalized experience.

In Monday’s announcement, American Airlines AAdvantage’s President, Rick Elieson, said,

“AAdvantage continues to be the easiest airline loyalty program for customers to engage with. Throughout our first 40 years, it’s been our privilege rewarding members for their continued loyalty to American with innovative benefits, unique partnerships and an evolving program that’s built for every customer.”

Last year, AAdvantage introduced additional member flexibility by eliminating award ticket change fees and automatically extending elite status through January 31, 2022. The program also offered a three-month head start on earning elite status and introduced a new way to earn elite benefits with AAdvantage co-branded credit cards. This year, members will also enjoy reciprocal benefits with JetBlue and Alaska Airlines.

Starting today (April 5, 2021), AAdvantage members can visit AAdvantage40th.com to explore the many benefits of the program and enjoy instant-win opportunities along the way. Some prizes include AAdvantage miles and Admirals Club memberships, as well as prizes and special offers from select partners. Members can also earn daily entries into a sweepstakes which will award 40 grand prize winners one million AAdvantage miles. One second place winner will also win a two-night travel package for four to Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando. New members can enroll in the AAdvantage program today and start playing immediately.

American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program was launched on May 1, 1981 by invitation-only and rewards included a First-Class ticket to any of the carrier’s destinations. Today, the program has 115 million members, including 144,000 who have been active since 1981. To celebrate the program’s 40th anniversary, American Airlines has launched a specially curated ‘mixtape’ with the top tracks of 1981 on Apple Music.
