On Tuesday (November 14, 2023), from the Dubai Airshow 2023, ATR announced that aircraft lessor Abelo has signed a deal for up to 20 ATR 72-600s, with a firm order for 10 and options for 10 more.  The incremental order builds on Abelo’s July 2022 order for 10 ATR 72-600s and 10 ATR 42-600S (Short Take-Off and Landing) variants.  Abelo will take delivery of their first ATR regional turboprop from the previous 2022 order by the end of the year, while deliveries for the additional aircraft are scheduled for 2026 through 2028.

In Tuesday’s announcement, Abelo’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Gorman, said,

“In ATR aircraft, we have discovered the ideal solution to support Abelo’s mission of connecting communities and businesses in an economically and environmentally responsible manner.  Our aim is to expedite the transition from older aircraft to the most advanced, low-emission technologies, and ATR turboprops have emerged as the top choice for achieving this objective.  Having already introduced our initial batch of new aircraft, we have great confidence that our investment will greatly enhance our portfolio and play a vital role in the success of our airline partners seeking outstanding performance, reduced emissions and enhanced passenger comfort.”

Also commenting on Abelo’s incremental aircraft order, ATR’s Chief Executive Officer, Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, added,

“With a total of 30 ATRs ordered, Abelo’s continued commitment to ATR is a testament to the strong market demand for fuel-efficient and cost-effective turboprops.  Through their versatility, low operating costs and reduced CO2 emissions, they serve as the backbone of numerous regional airlines worldwide.  Our strong relationship with Abelo relies on common purposes and visions, as well as on our joint recognition of turboprops’ great value proposition today and tomorrow.  We will remain committed to providing Abelo with the most innovative solutions long into the future.”

Abelo is an Irish regional aircraft lessor, specializing in regional turboprop aircraft.  The company’s core mission is to help the industry expedite the transition form older aircraft to the most advanced low-emission new technology aircraft.  Abelo is backed by Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., a global alternative investment firm.

ATR is the world’s number one regional aircraft manufacturer and their ATR 42 and 72 aircraft are the best-selling aircraft in the under 90-seat market segment.  The company’s turboprop aircraft represent the optimal and most sustainable choice for regional deployment at the lowest operating costs, and offer the ability to serve isolated communities living near challenging airfields.  Over the last decade, ATR has held 75 percent of the turboprop market and 36 percent of the overall regional aircraft market.  ATR is a joint venture between Airbus and Leonardo.
