Airbus has today announced that Air Niugini has placed a firm order for two more Airbus A220-100s. This follows an initial order for six of the type in 2023, and the carrier also has lease agreements with Azorra for three A220-300s.

On Wednesday (May 28, 2025), Airbus announced that Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, has placed a form order for two more Airbus A220-100s. This follows an initial order for six of the type placed in 2023. Additionally, Air Niugini has signed lease agreements for three Airbus A220-300s with U.S. based aircraft lessor Azorra. The new order was disclosed as Air Niugini’s first A220 entered final assembly at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada.
In Wednesday’s announcement, Air Niugini’s Chief Executive Officer, Gary Seddon, said,
“The A220 is set to form the backbone of our domestic and regional fleet and will support economic development in Papua New Guinea. As we continue to forecast strong growth we have made the decision to increase our orders for this fuel efficient type, bringing a whole new level of efficiency and comfort for our operations.”
Also commenting on the incremental A220 order, Airbus’ EVP – Commercial Aircraft, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, added,
“This is Air Niugini's second order for the A220. We are committed to working closely with the airline as we support its fleet renewal programme. The A220 is quite simply the most efficient aircraft in its size category, with a wider and spacious cabin and the range to fly non-stop to any destination on the carrier’s network.”
Offering the longest range and the lowest fuel consumption, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category. Depending on model and configuration, the A220 can carry 100 to 160 passengers on flights up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). The Airbus A220-100 serves the 100-135 seat market, while the larger A220-300 is perfectly tailored for the 120-160 seat market. Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest generation GTF™ engines, the A220 Family offers a 25 percent reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to previous generation aircraft. Like all in-production Airbus aircraft, the A220 can currently operate on up to 50 percent SAF, with Airbus aiming for all aircraft to be 100 percent SAF capable by 2030.

As of April 30, 2025, the Airbus A220 Family had won over 900 orders from more than 30 customers, of which 410 have been delivered. Currently, the A220 is in service with 24 operators worldwide, flying on over 1,600 routes to more than 470 destinations across the globe.
