On Thursday (June 29, 2023), Aer Lingus announced the launch of new service between Cork Airport and Lyon, France for the winter 2023/24 season. The route will operate once weekly on Saturdays through March 2024, allowing plenty of time for holidaymakers to hit the slopes while enjoying the snowy winter paradise. This winter, Aer Lingus will increase capacity between Ireland and France by 20 percent versus winter 2022/23, with a special focus on increasing flights to Lyon by 14 percent. In total, the carrier will bolster their capacity from Cork by nearly 37 percent, including the return of service to Tenerife and Malaga. The Cork-Tenerife route will start on October 28th, while Cork-Malaga flights will operate over Christmas and the February mid-term break. During the winter season, Aer Lingus will also double the number of weekly flight between Cork and Lanzarote to four.

In Thursday’s announcement, Aer Lingus’ Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Donal Moriarty, said,

“We are delighted to announce the launch of the Cork to Lyon route with Cork Airport, as well as the reintroduction of the Cork to Tenerife and Cork to Malaga routes and increased frequency from Cork to Lanzarote. We recognise the desire of our customers in the Southwest to continue their international exploration through the winter months and we are delighted to provide the Cork region with more routes to do so.

“We anticipate a surge in demand for these winter and sun routes, especially during the festive season when many are eager to travel. Whether dreaming of carving up the slopes in one of the 200 incredible ski resorts accessible from Lyon airport or basking in the glorious sun in Tenerife, we're here to help make our customers’ Christmas break unforgettable.”

Cork Airport’s Head of Aviation Business Development, Tara Finn, added,

Cork Airport welcomes the announcement by Aer Lingus of a new winter service to Lyon. The brand-new service will provide even more choice for passengers across the South of Ireland when planning a winter ski break. Lyon is France’s third largest city, and this new route will provide great access to some of France’s best-known ski resorts like Val Thorens, Chamonix, and Tignes. The announcement by Aer Lingus of the return of a winter service to Tenerife, along with increased frequencies on Lanzarote and Malaga will naturally come as very welcome news to the many passengers seeking warmer climates from Munster’s favourite airport this winter.”

Additionally, for autumn 2023, Aer Lingus will operate nonstop flights between Cork Airport and Paris-Charles de Gaulle, facilitating travel for the many fans from Cork and the South of Ireland who plan on traveling to the Rugby World Cup in France.
