On Wednesday (November 17, 2021) WestJet announced the expansion of their global network with the launch of new non-stop service between Calgary and London Heathrow from early spring 2022. With the addition of London Heathrow, the carrier expands their connections from Calgary to 77 non-stop destinations annually. The new Calgary-London (LHR) flights will complement WestJet’s existing service to London Gatwick from Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax. Additional details on WestJet’s new Calgary-Heathrow service will be released in the coming weeks.

In Wednesday’s announcement, WestJet’s Chief Commercial Officer, John Weatherill, said,

“As the airline with the most flights from Alberta, this is an important recovery milestone as we forge new connections between Canada and one of the world's most sought after global hubs. We continue to strengthen our network, offering more options for business and leisure travellers and these investments will expedite our industry's recovery while ensuring Western Canada builds back from the pandemic more connected than ever before.

“We are committed to the expansion of our global hub in Calgary and supporting the recovery of many sectors who rely on travel and tourism. As the airline with the most non-stop European destinations from YYC, we are looking forward to guests benefitting from more options and increased connectivity for travel between Canada and the UK.”

Celebrating 25 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent. The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to 100 destinations in 23 countries (pre-pandemic). Even during these unprecedented times, the carrier has maintained their rating by Cirium as one of the top ten airlines for on-time performance in North America.
