On Friday (September 25, 2020), WestJet raised the stakes for Canadian carriers by offering COVID-19 coverage to U.S. destinations. The carrier also announced the doubling of coverage for air-only and WestJet Vacations customers' COVID-19 related medical and quarantine expenses to CAD $200,000. The game-changing coverage also extends for up to 21 days for travel through August 31, 2021 on bookings to/from the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe (including the UK), and inbound to Canada. Through their new partner TruGo®, WestJet guests traveling on one-way tickets will also enjoy complimentary coverage for up to seven days. The enhanced coverage is retroactive to include all reservations made from September 18, 2020. In Friday’s announcement, WestJet’s Chief Commercial Officer, Arved von zur Muehlen, said,

“Our research shows that a lack of COVID insurance us a considerable barrier to travel and our guests were seeking the inclusion of U.S. destinations to our travel insurance offering. Eligible guests travelling to and from the destinations we serve can now have an added layer of confidence knowing that they are covered for up to $200,000 CAD against unforeseen medical costs related to COVID-19 when booking with WestJet.”

Prior to the Global COVID-19 pandemic, WestJet and subsidiary regional airlines, WestJet Encore and WestJet Link, offered scheduled service to over 110 destinations across North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe. WestJet and WestJet Encore continue to connect all 39 of the carrier’s Canadian domestic airports with reduced capacity, ensuring essential cargo and passenger connectivity. During these unprecedented times, the carrier has maintained their rating by Cirium as one of the top ten airlines for on-time performance in North America.
