On Friday (June 3, 2022), WestJet announced the launch of inaugural service between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Edinburgh, Scotland, with flight WS16 departing Toronto at 21:25 local time on Thursday night. The carrier now offers service to five European destinations from Toronto Pearson including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, London-Gatwick and Barcelona. WestJet’s newest transatlantic service to Edinburgh will operate three times weekly during the peak summer season, complementing service from both Toronto and Halifax to Glasgow.
In Friday’s announcment, WestJet’s Chief Commercial Officer, John Weatherill, said,
“We are thrilled that Edinburgh is the final European connection to inaugurate from Toronto this summer, rounding out the restoration of our network and strengthening our offerings from Toronto. These cities are some of the world's most vibrant and iconic destinations and we are working diligently as demand for international travel continues to ramp up. Seamless connectivity between Europe and Canada is critical to the recovery of Canada's travel and tourism industry. We look forward to welcoming more Canadians and global guests on board this summer as we continue to restore our network to pre-pandemic levels.”
Also commenting on the new route launch, Greater Toronto Airports’ Director of Strategic Customers Relationships, Janik Reigate, said,
“The launch of this route is cause for celebration, not only because it connects our valued passengers with the capital of Scotland, but also because it rounds out WestJet's European service for the summer at Toronto Pearson. As the public begins to think about where their summer adventures will take them, WestJet's suite of European destinations is the perfect choice for an unforgettable vacation.”
During over 25 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent. The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to 100 destinations in 23 countries (pre-pandemic). Even during the pandemic, WestJet maintained their rating by Cirium as one of the top ten airlines for on-time performance in North America.
