Today (July 13, 2020), WestJet announced their updated August schedule featuring service from 39 Canadian airports with over 200 daily departures to 48 destinations across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe. The carrier’s updated schedule is supported by WestJet’s multi-layered health and safety framework to ensure Canadians can travel with confidence through the company’s ‘Safety Above All’ program. WestJet is increasing domestic frequencies and destinations between July 15th and September 4th, 2020 including 39 destinations in Canada, Five in the U.S., two in Europe and one each in the Caribbean and Mexico. The carrier will also re-introduce nonstop Boeing 787 Dreamliner service between Calgary and London-Gatwick and Paris from August 20, 2020. Additionally, WestJet will continue to serve five key transborder destinations including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York-LaGuardia and Orlando. WestJet will also offer flights to Cancun, Mexico and Montego Bay in Jamaica. In Monday’s announcement, WestJet’s Chief Commercial Officer, Arved von zur Muehlen said,

“With the many safeguards and procedures in place, we are certain Canadians can safely resume travel to destinations across our network. We continue to adapt our schedule to meet the needs of our guests and through our continued investments economies can begin to recover with the support of domestic tourism driven by air travel. Despite these headwinds, we are committed to ensuring air travel remains affordable and accessible to Canadians from coast-to-coast during this difficult time. While an increase in flying is a positive sign, we are prudently monitoring our guests loads to ensure we are managing our airline and the health of our guests and crew responsibly. The patchwork of domestic travel restrictions and quarantine periods that are currently in place within our own borders are severely limiting Canada’s economic recovery and putting hundreds of thousands of jobs in our critical industry at risk. We must standardize intra-provincial travel advice to ensure Canadians can move safely and freely across our country.”

Prior to the Global COVID-19 pandemic, WestJet and subsidiary regional airlines, WestJet Encore and WestJet Link, offered scheduled service to over 110 destinations across North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe. WestJet and WestJet Encore continue to connect all 39 of the carrier’s Canadian domestic airports with reduced capacity, ensuring essential cargo and passenger connectivity. WestJet’s August 2020 schedule represents a 10 percent increase versus July, but still represents a 75 percent decrease in flying compared to August 2019.
