United Airlines has named Edward ‘Ted’ Philip as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. Mr. Philip has served on United’s board since 2016, and as Lead Director since 2020. He brings nearly three decades of corporate leadership to the role.
On Thursday (May 27, 2021), United Airlines announced the appointment of Edward ‘Ted” Philip as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. Mr. Philip, who has served on United’s board since 2016, and as Lead Director since 2020, succeeds Oscar Munoz, who has served as Executive Chairman of the Board since 2020. He brings nearly three decades of corporate experience across several industries to the new role and currently also serves on the boards of Hasbro, Inc., and BRP, Inc. Ted Philip holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In Thursday’s announcement, United Airlines’ CEO, Scott Kirby, said,
“Ted's storied career and leadership across the finance, technology and healthcare sectors have made him an invaluable member of the United board. His insights and financial expertise will be critical as we look ahead to United's 'return to new' and focus on becoming the global leader in aviation. I also want to express my gratitude to Oscar for his leadership and the groundwork he laid that enabled United to persevere through the most disruptive crisis in our history. He will be missed by the entire United team.”
United’s new Non-Executive Chairman, Ted Philip, added,
"I'm honored to be named non-executive chairman of United and am looking forward to continuing to work with the strongest leadership team in the industry. I am eager to work with the United team to deliver value to all of our key stakeholders, and I thank Oscar for his leadership, especially his tremendous contributions this past year as executive chairman, and throughout his successful tenure as CEO.”
Mr. Philip previously served as Chief Operating Officer for Partners in Health, a global non-profit healthcare organization, providing services to underserved communities. Prior to joining Partners in Health, he served as the Managing General Partner at the Highland Consumer Fund. Additionally, Philip is one of the founders of the internet search company, Lycos, Inc., where he held various executive positions including President, Chief Operating Office and Chief Financial Officer. Prior to his tenure at Lycos, Mr. Philip served as Vice President of Finance for the Walt Disney Company and he also spent several years in investment banking.
United Airlines’ shared purpose is “Connecting People. Uniting the World.” Shares in the company’s parent, United Airlines Holdings, Inc., are publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol ‘UAL.’
