On Tuesday (June 11, 2024), TAP Air Portugal announced the launch of their first onboard film festival, the Altitude Film Fest.  The initiative celebrates the world of cinema, while promoting Portugal, and the country’s culture and traditions.  The Altitude Film Fest gives global filmmakers the chance to compete in two categories, documentary and fiction short films, and then have their films screened and voted on in one of Portugal’s largest cinemas, TAP’s inflight entertainment (IFE) system on long-haul flights.  Submissions must focus on Portuguese culture and/or part of the film must be shot in Portugal or Portuguese territories.  Registration for the Altitude Film Fest is free and applications are open until June 30, 2024.

TAP will appoint a panel of judges for each category, made up of a distinguished group of personalities from the world of cinema, who will be responsible for viewing and selecting the 10 finalist films.  The films will play on TAP’s IFE system during October 2024, allowing passengers to watch and  participate in the choice of winners via a survey on the entertainment platform.  Winners will be chosen in two stages, with 40 percent of the final score awarded by the festival’s official judges, and 60 percent of the final score determined by passengers.

The Altitude Film Fest winners will be announced at an awards ceremony which will be held on World Cinema Day (November 5, 2024) in Lisbon.  The films awarded the Grand Prix for Best Fiction Film and Best Documentary will each be rewarded with a travel grant worth €3,000.  The award recognizes the artistic and narrative excellence of the winning films, while giving filmmakers the opportunity to explore new experiences around the world.  For more information about the Altitude Film Fest, please click here.
