Late Thursday, Spirit Airlines announced they will build a new state-of-the-art world headquarters near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Spirit will be relocating 1,000 employees from their longtime Miramar, Florida headquarters, adding 250 new jobs.

Miramar, Florida-based ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) announced in a press release Thursday plans to build a sprawling new campus in Dania Beach, Florida. The company will relocate 1,000 current employees to their new global headquarters by 2022, while adding 250 new jobs. Spirit Airlines has outgrown their Miramar, Florida HQ, where they have operated for over 20 years. Site plans have been submitted to the City of Dania Beach for the new campus of up to 500,000 square feet which will be located at Dania Pointe. The new location is a mixed-used development occupied by nearly a million square feet of retail, restaurants and housing.

Over the next 36 months, Spirit expects to spend around $250M in the development of their new headquarters, which should be ready by mid-2022. The company has secured the land from Dania Pointe owner Kimco Realty (NYSE: KIM) and Gensler has been selected as the lead architectural firm. Spirit has also teamed with Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL), who will provide advisory services for the project. The new headquarters will be located minutes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and will house corporate offices and a crew training facility, which will include flight simulators. In the announcement, Spirit Airlines President and CEO, Ted Christie stated,
“It was two decades ago when Spirit moved to South Florida and temporarily headquartered in a building less than 1,000 square feet. Today’s announcement shows just how far we’ve come. This new home will keep us connected to the South Florida community while improving our team’s efficiency and ability to support what is an ever-expanding international operation. We’ve enjoyed a great relationship with the City of Miramar, an outstanding location for headquarters and businesses of all sizes. We look forward to creating more jobs and driving future economic development as South Florida’s Hometown Airline.”
