On Saturday (May 2, 2026), Spirit Airlines announced that all flights have been canceled, and they have started the orderly wind-down of all operations. Customers should be advised that Spirit Airlines’ customer service channels are no longer available. In response to this news, Spirit competitors such as American Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue and Frontier Airlines have all announced assistance to stranded Spirit Airlines customers and displaced team members, including rescue fares and other support.
In light of the Spirit Airlines shutdown, JetBlue has announced that they are helping stranded Spirit customers with $99 rescue fares. JetBlue will cap fares to ensure affordable rebooking options remain available as more travelers look to rebook and demand increases. The airline is also extending their jumpseat agreement for Spirit pilots and flight attendants trying to get home and is offering interview opportunities for open roles at JetBlue. The carrier has also announced plans to launch 11 new routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to help backfill critical service and allow customers to continue to see a strong selection of flights and destinations.
In Saturday’s announcement, JetBlue’s CEO, Joanna Geraghty, said,
“This is really tough news for the thousands of Spirit team members affected, as well as the customers who were planning trips on Spirit. We got to know many of their crewmembers during our acquisition talks, and we’re thinking about everyone whose lives are being disrupted. We want to help fill the void created by this loss.
“With major operations in Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, we’re in a unique position to help Spirit customers get where they need to go and ensure flights remain affordable despite greater demand. We understand how unsettling it may be for travelers who are suddenly unsure of what to do next.”
JetBlue’s $99 one-way rescue fares are available to individuals with proof of a valid Spirit itinerary for the same route for travel through Wednesday, May 6, 2026 (T&Cs apply). These customers should call 1-800-JETBLUE to discuss their situation. Beginning May 1, 2026, JetBlue will also cap all Blue Basic fares at $299 on JetBlue-operated nonstop routes to and from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) that were also operated by Spirit as of April 2026. The fare caps will apply to new itinerary purchases made through May 8, 2026, for travel between May 2, 2026 and May 8, 2026.
Frontier Airlines has also today also announced systemwide rescue fare discounts for Spirit Airlines Customers impacted by the shutdown, and is also offering a $199 ‘Go Wild’ All-You-Can-Fly Summer Pass to support travelers affected by Spirit Airlines’ end of operations, helping customers maintain access to low fares. In Saturday’s announcement, Frontier Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Bobby Schroeter, said,
“Spirit Airlines played an important role in expanding access to affordable travel and bringing more low fares to more people. We recognize this is a difficult time for their customers and team members. Frontier is making discounted fares available to help people keep their travel plans and maintain access to low fares.”
In support of impacted Spirit customers, Frontier is offering up to 50 percent off base fares across their network for travel through November 19, 2026. Customers can book by May 10th on Frontier’s website or app using promo code SAVENOW. American Airlines also announced that their team is doing everything they can to support Spirit Airlines customers and team members affected by Spirit’s immediate wind-down of operations. The carrier is in touch with the Administration, including the Department of Transportation, on steps they are taking to help mitigate the impact on the communities Spirit serves and the traveling public. To help stranded Spirit customers, American has put rescue fares into place on Spirit routes where American also offers nonstop service. Currently, American serves 70 of the 72 airports Spirit previously served, and 67 of the specific routes Spirit operated.
The carrier is also reviewing opportunities to add additional capacity, including using larger aircraft and adding flights on critical routes, to support as many affected passengers as possible. Additionally, American is working to provide transportation for Spirit team members who have been displaced on a work trip, and looks forward to welcoming qualified Spirit team members to American.
