Global shipping giant A.P. Moller – Maersk will launch Maersk Air Cargo, a new dedicated air freight carrier to expand their integrated logistics capabilities. The carrier will be based at Denmark’s second largest airport in Billund.
On Friday (April 8, 2022), A.P. Moller – Maersk announced that they will launch Maersk Air Cargo, a new dedicated air freight carrier based in Billund, Denmark. The airline will become Maersk’s main air freight offering, expanding their integrated freight logistics services. Maersk Air Cargo has also announced their intention to enter an agreement with the Flight Personnel Union (FPU), part of the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions. With the additional owned and controlled capacity, Maersk Air Cargo will help to make supply chain journeys more resilient and intuitive, complementing the company’s ocean, inland, warehousing and customs services.
In Friday’s announcment, A.P. Moller – Maersk’s Global Head of Logistics and Services, Aymeric Chandavoine, said,
“Air freight is a crucial enabler of flexibility and agility in global supply chains as it allows our customers to tackle time-critical supply chain challenges and provides transport mode options for high value cargo. We strongly believe in working closely with our customers. Therefore, it is key for Maersk to also increase our presence in the global air cargo industry by introducing Maersk Air Cargo to cater even better for the needs of our customers.”
Also commenting on the launch of the new airline, A.P. Moller- Maersk’s Global Head of Air and LCL, Torben Bengtsson, said,
“Maersk Air Cargo is an important step of the Maersk Air Freight strategy, as it will allow us to offer customers a truly unique combination of air freight integrated with other transport modes. We see an increased and continued demand for air cargo both today and going forward as well as a growing demand for end-to-end logistics, why it is important for us to strengthen our own-controlled capacity and advance further on our air freight strategy.”
Maersk last operated from Billund in 2005, and Maersk Air Cargo will now progressively deploy and operate a fleet of five aircraft including two new Boeing 777Fs and three leased Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft. Additionally, three new Boeing 767-300 freighters will be added to the company’s operation between the U.S. and China, which will initially be handled by a third party operator. Maersk Air Cargo is expected to be fully operational by the second half of 2022, with the new aircraft entering service from H2 2022 through 2024.
