From today, SAS has launched two new ticket types that include biofuel on all domestic, Scandinavian and European flights. The carrier’s goal is to use fossil-free equivalent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
On Monday (April 3, 2023), SAS announced the launch of two new ticket types that include biofuel for all domestic Scandinavian and European flights. The new Go Smart Bio and Plus Pro Bio tickets include the cost of approximately 50 percent biofuel to lower emissions on the flight. This is calculated on an average journey corresponding to approximately 60 minutes on Swedish and Norwegian domestic, 60 minutes within Scandinavia, 35 minutes on Danish domestic or 1.5 hours on European flights. The amount of biofuel purchased will be used to replace the equivalent amount of traditional jet fuel. SAS guarantees the purchase of SAF within 12 months and will not make a profit on purchases.
In Monday’s announcement, SAS’ Head of Sustainability, Ann-Sofie Hörlin, said,
“Our journey toward a more sustainable aviation continues and by increasing the use of bio fuel we are bridging the gap to zero emission flights. We know it is important for our customers, both leisure and corporate, to actively take part in these efforts and SAS Bio will fill this demand.”
During its lifecycle, SAF can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional fossil fuels.
SAS is the leading airline in Scandinavia, typically carrying over 30 million passengers annually from its main hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm to 125 destinations in Europe, the US and Asia (pre-pandemic figures). The company has targeted a reduction in carbon emissions by 25 percent by 2025, compared to 2005 levels, and hopes to transition to 100% biofuel for domestic flights by 2030. SAS also offers ground handling services, technical maintenance and cargo services. The carrier is a founding member of the Star Alliance, which celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2022.
