SAS has today announced the appointment of Jason Mahoney as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mr. Mahoney has extensive aviation experience, previously serving as Chief Technical Officer at British Airways, among other leadership roles.
On Tuesday (March 7, 2023), SAS announced the appointment of Jason Mahoney as the carrier’s new Chief Operating officer (COO) effective May 1st, 2023. Mr. Mahoney brings vast airline industry experience to his new role, serving previously as Chief Technical Officer at British Airways, where he was responsible for driving technical engineering and large-scale operational changes worldwide. Mahoney also held other leadership positions at British Airways, including COO for a number of years, and also previously served as Director of Engineering and Maintenance at TUI. Jason Mahoney will succeed Simon Pauck Hanson who departed SAS in January.
In today’s announcement, SAS’ President and CEO, Anko van der Werff, said,
“I am very pleased to welcome Jason Mahoney to SAS. Jason is a well-recognized and experienced professional within the airline industry. He will be a valuable addition to SAS’ top management team.”
Also commenting on his upcoming role as SAS’ COO, Jason Mahoney, said,

It is an airline with a long legacy and a strong brand and I see great potential ahead given its leading position in Scandinavia and the comprehensive transformation process SAS is currently undertaking. I am looking forward to be part of that journey and to continue developing the operations together with the team. Additionally, Erik Westman has been appointed EVP – Network and Revenue Management, after five months in the position as acting, and is now a permanent member od SAS Group Management. Mr. Westman has held several leadership roles with SAS over the last decade.
SAS is the leading airline in Scandinavia, typically carrying over 30 million passengers annually from its main hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm to 125 destinations in Europe, the US and Asia (pre-pandemic figures). The company has targeted a reduction in carbon emissions by 25 percent by 2025, compared to 2005 levels, and hopes to transition to 100% biofuel for domestic flights by 2030. SAS also offers ground handling services, technical maintenance and cargo services. The carrier is a founding member of the Star Alliance, which celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2022.
