On Wednesday (October 19, 2022), Play Airlines announced the launch of twice weekly service between Iceland and Athens starting June 2, 2023 and running through October 2023. Athens is considered the cradle of western civilization, and the vibrant city offers world-famous historical sights and a magnificent food culture, where fresh ingredients and healthy Mediterranean cuisine come together. The new route will also create the opportunity for customers to travel from Greece to the U.S. via a brief stopover in Iceland. Play currently serves four U.S. destinations including New York, Washington D.C., Boston, and Baltimore.
In Wednesday’s route announcement, Play Airlines’ CEO, Birgir Jónsson, said,
“I am so excited for this new destination and believe many will agree with me. This will be a tremendous opportunity for Icelanders to get to Athens and this will add to the flights for people looking to get between Athens and the U.S. From Athens you can also get to many of the best Greek Islands. From Athens International Airport you can fly to Santorini, Mykonos, Crete and Rhodes. So this route will be a great option for travellers in the U.S., Greece and Iceland.”
