On Tuesday (February 10, 2026), Lufthansa announced that Lufthansa City Airlines has opened a new base in Frankfurt. The first flight, VL946, took off from Frankfurt to Manchester in the late afternoon of Monday, February 9th, and was operated with an Airbus A320neo, registration D-AIJN. Berlin and Valencia will be added to the route network in February, followed by Düsseldorf and Málaga in March. Additional destinations will be added for summer 2026, including London Heathrow, Stockholm, Bilbao, Hamburg, Helsinki, Ibiza, Marseille, and Bucharest. Lufthansa City Airlines’ Frankfurt-based fleet will grow to seven Airbus A320neos by September 2026.
In Tuesday’s announcement, Lufthansa City Airlines’ Chief Operating Officer, Peter Albers, said,
“With our new base and the targeted expansion of our short-haul network, we are simultaneously strengthening our market position and laying the foundation for further growth within the Group.”
Currently, Lufthansa City Airlines operates 13 aircraft from their home hub in Munich. In 2025, the carrier operated nearly 16,000 flights carrying around two million passengers to 27 destinations.

The carrier continues to focus on growth and is actively recruiting staff. Approximately 60 team members have already been hired in Frankfurt, and Lufthansa City expects to hire a further 80 cockpit crew and 200 cabin crew members in the coming months. The airline currently employs around 450 people. Lufthansa City Airlines has been a permanent member of the Star Alliance since September 2025, providing access to a global network and additional benefits for passengers.
