Japanese freight forwarding company Kintetsu World Express has reached an agreement with Lufthansa Cargo for the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from October 2022 through September 2023, reducing their CO2 footprint by five percent.
On Tuesday (September 27, 2022), Lufthansa Cargo announced an agreement with Japanese freight forwarding company Kintetsu World Express for CO2 neutral freight transport. From October 2022 through September 2023 Kintetsu will reduce around five percent of their total CO2 footprint through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for transported freight with Lufthansa Cargo. Additionally, the company will offset the ‘well-to-tank’ emissions generated during the production and provision of SAF with the help of certified climate protection projects.
In Tuesday’s announcement, Kintetsu World Express’ President & Chief Executive Officer, Nobutoshi Torii, said,
“Climate change is getting more and more obvious and devastating everywhere in the world. As an asset-light freight forwarder, reducing our Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions is key to winning the battle against global warming. And SAF is a rising star. Recently, in our initial response to the recommendations of The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), we declared our intention to actively participate in our partner airlines’ SAF programs. I am delighted and proud to work with our long-time partner Lufthansa Cargo for the sustainable future of the air cargo industry.”
Also commenting on the new sustainability collaboration, Lufthansa Cargo AG’s Chief Executive Officer, Dorothea von Boxberg, said,
“We are very proud that we have been able to win Kintetsu World Express, one of our most important customers, to transport their freight with us on a CO2-neutral basis. Already today, Sustainable Aviation Fuel offers the opportunity to save around 80 percent of emissions in airfreight transport. That's why every customer who takes advantage of this opportunity makes a decisive contribution to advancing decarbonization in logistics. Thanks to the commitment of Kintetsu World Express and our other customers who have chosen Sustainable Aviation Fuel, we have already been able to replace around two percent of our annual fossil fuel requirements with Sustainable Aviation Fuel in 2022.”
With revenue of €3.8 billion and 7.2 billion freight ton kilometers in 2021, Lufthansa Cargo is one of the world’s leading air freight companies, employing approximately 4,200 team members worldwide. In 2021, the company reached important milestones such as a fleet modernization to an all Boeing 777F fleet, and the introduction of CO2 neutral freight transport for all customers. During 2022, the airline will equip their fleet of dedicated freighters with Sharkskin technology to reduce drag, and expand their SAF program to further reduce CO2 emissions. The company also operates an extensive road feeder service network. Lufthansa Cargo is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and is the Group’s logistics specialist.
