On Wednesday (May 26, 2021), KLM announced that after previously expanding their summer 2021 schedule, they will add six intercontinental destinations to their winter 2021/22 schedule, which starts on October 31, 2021 and runs through March 26, 2022. The new destinations include Mombasa, Orlando, Cancun, Bridgetown, Port of Spain and Phuket. The Kenyan beach destination of Mombasa will be served twice-weekly, while flights to Orlando, Florida will be offered four times weekly, and service to Cancun, Mexico, three-times weekly. The Mombasa, Orlando and Cancun routes will be operated with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. KLM will also offer three weekly flights to Bridgetown in Barbados, as well as three weekly flights to Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago, with both routes being serviced with Airbus A330s. The Thai Island of Phuket will be served four times weekly with a Boeing 777-300.
In Wednesday’s announcement, KLM’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, said,
“For KLM, this represents the next, significant step towards rebuilding its network for the benefit of our customers. As many as 99 destinations in Europe will be served during summer and, with this latest expansion, KLM’s intercontinental network will also be significantly strengthened for winter.”
KLM’s Mombasa service will be combined with Nairobi, and Orlando will also be combined with Miami, for the return journey to Amsterdam. Phuket, Thailand will be served to and from Amsterdam via Kuala Lumpur, while Bridgetown and Port of Spain will be combined, and Cancun will be a nonstop connection.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, KLM has focused on maintaining their network destinations to ensure essential cargo and passenger connectivity. With improving market conditions, the carrier is now ready to expand their network within and to regions showing the fastest recovery. KLM’s goal is to offer customers the largest network possible by maintaining flexible network planning and the ability to respond quickly to market opportunities. This includes the ability to quickly increase flight frequencies or to deploy larger aircraft.
