On Tuesday (November 9, 2021), DHL Express announced the inaugural flight of their new airline, DHL Air Austria, which took place on Monday with a Boeing 757 freighter. The Vienna Airport-based airline has created 54 new jobs, and the carrier’s launch marks a major milestone for DHL Express, which has operated in Austria for 41 years. The new cargo airline will handle European cargo flights in the future with 18 Boeing 757s and approximately 176 pilots. Daily operations will be managed by the employees based at Vienna International Airport including crew scheduling, flight planning and crew training. DHL Air Austria’s team will also be responsible for safety, quality, compliance and aircraft maintenance planning.

In Tuesday’s announcement, DHL Express Austria’s CEO, Ralf Schweighöfer, said,

“With this important step, we are making our air freight network in Europe more flexible and stable, while at the same time continuing to meet our customers’ high demand for cross-border express deliveries and providing them with sufficient capacity.”

Also commenting on the new cargo carrier’s launch, DHL Air Austria’s Managing Director, Barbara Achleitner, said,

“The establishment of DHL Express’ first Austrian airline and the receipt of all licenses is a historic moment for all of us. The efficient implementation of this important milestone would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our team and, above all, without the great support of the responsible ministry as well as Austro Control. It makes us particularly proud that we have managed such enormous achievements together as a team within nine months and that we are creating 54 new jobs at our headquarters at Vienna International Airport.”

With the launch of talks with Austrian authorities starting in February of this year, DHL Air Austria’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and Operating License (OL) were issued on October 18, 2021, with the entire process completed in a record time of only nine months. Currently, DHL has three of 18 Boeing 757s registered in Austria, with the transfer of 15 more aircraft expected during the first quarter of 2022. By that time, the DHL Air Austria team will have moved into the modern Office Park 4, where operations will be managed from. The new Office Park 4 at Vienna Airport is one of the most sustainable office buildings in Vienna.
