On Thursday (February 13), Delta Air Lines announced an enhancement of their codeshare with Vietnam Airlines which will provide seamless connectivity between Tokyo-Haneda and Hanoi. Immediately, customers travelling from Minneapolis and Los Angeles to Tokyo-Haneda can further connect on Vietnam Airlines’ codeshared flights to Hanoi. From March 29th, when Delta has consolidated all their Tokyo service at Haneda, Delta customers from Atlanta, Detroit, Seattle, Portland and Honolulu, will also benefit from seamless connectivity to Hanoi via Vietnam Airlines. Similarly, Delta will add Vietnam Airlines’ code to all flights to/from Tokyo-Haneda. In Thursday’s announcement, Delta Air Lines SVP-Alliances, Perry Cantarutti said,

“This is going to be a transformative year for Delta in Japan as we consolidate our services in Haneda next month. The partnership with fellow SkyTeam member Vietnam Airlines, further strengthens Delta’s position in Haneda as the largest U.S. airline, while enhancing connectivity between the two countries.”

Vietnam Airlines is the national flag carrier of Vietnam and one of the top carriers in Southeast Asia. The airline operates 97 routes to 18 domestic and 35 international destinations with an average of 400 daily flights. Vietnam Airlines is also the first airline in the world to successfully operate next generation Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Airbus A350-900s simultaneously. The carrier has maintained a 4-Star Skytrax rating since 2015.

Delta’s one-way codeshare with Vietnam Airlines started in 2010 when the carrier joined SkyTeam. At that time, the Vietnam Airlines' code was added to Delta flights between Tokyo-Narita and U.S. gateways, including Delta’s domestic network. Delta is now the first US carrier to place their code on a Vietnamese carrier. This became possible after Vietnam Airlines received a Category 1 International Aviation Safety Assessment from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal FAA in December 2019.
