Bamboo Airways has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sydney Airport to launch twice weekly direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Sydney from March 29, 2022, becoming the first international airline to serve Sydney since reopening.

On Monday (February 28, 2022), Bamboo Airways announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sydney Airport to launch direct twice weekly service from Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City and Sydney starting March 29, 2022. The carrier plans on increasing frequencies on the route to four times weekly by the end of 2022, subject to demand. The direct route will shorten the flight time to Sydney to approximately eight hours, a reduction of around seven hours compared to connecting flights. The route will be serviced with a state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Today’s announcement was marked by a ceremony at Sydney Airport attended by representatives from Bamboo Airways, airport authorities and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the celebration, Sydney Airport’s CEO, Geoff Culbert said,
“Hot on the heels of Australia’s borders re-opening it’s terrific to be announcing a new airline partner in Bamboo Airways. Vietnam is an incredibly popular destination for Australian leisure travelers and with a big Vietnamese diaspora in Sydney, it makes sense to build greater connectivity between our two cities. There is so much to love about Vietnam, and with this service increasing tourism capacity by more than 60,000 seats every year, I know many travel-starved Australians will be keen to get out and see one of the most exciting destinations in Asia.”
Also commenting on the new route, Bamboo Airways’ CEO, Dang Tat Thang, said,
“We are thrilled to be the first new international airline at Sydney Airport soon after Australia lifted international travel restrictions. Bamboo Airways expects to provide a world-class flight experience to Australian travelers as well as the large Vietnam diaspora in Sydney, thus fulfilling the considerably increasing market demands in the post-pandemic period. With the valuable support of Australia’s busiest airport and the NSW government, we are committed to making the new regular nonstop Sydney – HCM City service a great success for both sides and look forward to further development in our partnership.”
Bamboo Airways also previously operated their first flights between HCM City and Melbourne on February 19-20, 2022.
Bamboo Airways was established in 2017 as the first private Vietnamese airline dedicated to providing 5-star services with a focus on hospitality, and the goal of connecting high-potential holiday destinations in Vietnam to the world. For 2022, the carrier plans on operating 40 international routes, including service to destinations in the US, UK, Australia and more, in addition to domestic flights in Vietnam. Bamboo Airways has transported over 5 million passengers with an on-time performance of 96%, higher than any other carrier in Vietnam.
