On Thursday (October 5, 2023), Miami International Airport (MIA) announced that Mexican low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus will commence operations at the airport next summer. Starting July1st, 2024, the airline will launch three weekly flights between Miami and Monterrey on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The next day, Viva Aerobus will also launch four weekly flights to Merida on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The routes will be serviced with a mix of Airbus A320/A320neo Family aircraft.

In Thursday’s announcement, Miami-Dade County’s Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, said,

“I greatly look forward to welcoming Viva Aerobus and its daily flights to Miami-Dade County next summer, which will provide our residents and visitors with even more travel options to Mexico. Mexico has been one of MIA’s fastest-growing travel destinations in recent years, and I am excited to see Viva Aerobus add to that growth with its new service to Monterrey and Merida coming soon.”

Also commenting on the airline’s Miami debut, Viva Aerobus’ CEO, Juan Carlos Zuazua, added,

“We are excited to start flying to new cities in the US as part of our major expansion strategy in this country, encouraging passengers to take advantage of our increased connectivity, low fares, and modern fleet. This new route not only connects individual cities but provides The Magic City passengers with a wide range of connecting flights that link Monterrey and Merida to over 30 key destinations to discover Mexico. It also represents more opportunities for Mexican travelers to enjoy Miami´s natural wonders, museums, and theme parks, serving leisure, VFR, and business markets; thus, boosting local tourism and economy.”

In 2022, Mexico was MIA’s second largest international market, responsible for nearly 1.7 million passengers. Both Monterrey and Merida are currently served to/from Miami with American Airlines. Viva Aerobus launched operations in 2006, and expects to operate 190 daily flights in 2024.
