United Airlines Begins Epic Transatlantic Expansion With 30 New or Resumed Routes

Over the next eight weeks, United Airlines will kick off their largest transatlantic expansion in the company’s history with the launch of 30 new or resumed routes. The expansion includes new nonstop routes to the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France Spain and Portugal.

On Tuesday (April 26, 2022), United Airlines announced the start of the carrier’s largest transatlantic expansion in company history with the launch of 30 new or resumed routes over the next eight weeks, including new nonstop service to destinations in the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France and more. From April through June, United will also be the only U.S. airline to fly to popular destinations such as Amman (Jordan), Bergen (Norway), the Azores (Portugal), Palma de Mallorca (Spain ) and Tenerife (Spanish Canary Islands). Additionally, the airline is launching five new direct flights to some of Europe’s most popular business and tourist hubs including London, Milan, Zurich, Munich and Nice, while resuming 14 other traditionally served transatlantic routes and increasing frequencies on six others.


In Tuesday’s announcment, United Airlines’ SVP – International Network and Alliances, Patrick Quayle, said,

United continues to leverage its leading global network in new and exciting ways to help our customers make meaningful memories and experience new cultures around the world.”


With the expansion, United’s transatlantic route network will be 25 percent larger than in the pre-pandemic period in 2019. United will now offer more transatlantic destinations than all other U.S. airlines combined, becoming the largest airline across the Atlantic for the first time in history.

New service between Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Amman, Jordan will start on May 5th, with three weekly flights serviced by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Flights to Ponta Delgada in the Azores will launch on May 13th, complementing United’s existing service between New York-Newark (EWR) and Porto, as well as flights from both Dulles and Newark to Lisbon. The route between Washington-Dulles and the Azores will be operated with a brand new Boeing 737-8 MAX featuring United’s new signature interior, Bluetooth connectivity and overhead bin space for every guest. Service between New York/Newark and Bergen, Norway will start on May 20th, with United becoming the only U.S. airline to fly to Norway. The carrier will offer three weekly flights on the route with a Boeing 757-200.


As previously mentioned, United’s schedule will also include service to popular fun and sun getaways in the Spanish Balearic and Canary Islands. From June 2nd, the airline will offer three weekly flights between New York-Newark and Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) with a Boeing 767-300ER, offering the only nonstop flight between the U.S. and Mallorca. Additionally, United Airlines’ guests will also enjoy the only direct service between North America and the Canary Islands with service to Tenerife. Starting June 9th, the airline will offer three weekly flights between New York-Newark and Tenerife with a Boeing 757-200.


Other Expanded European services include new daily flights between Boston and London Heathrow, which started on April 14th, complementing the carrier’s existing service to Heathrow from all seven hubs. On April 23, 2022, the United also launched new daily flights between Denver and Munich, as well as between Chicago and Zurich. United is also the only U.S. airline offering direct service to Geneva. Starting April 29th, the airline will also launch new daily flights between New York-Newark and Nice on the Côte d’Azur in France. Service between Chicago and Milan will launch on May 6th with daily flights, complementing existing seasonal service between Chicago and Rome, and existing flights from New York-Newark to Milan.


Finally, in the coming weeks United will increase frequencies between New York-Newark and Dublin, Frankfurt and Rome. Flight frequencies to London-Heathrow will also be increased from New York-Newark, Denver, and San Francisco. Additionally, the carrier will expand service between Washington-Dulles and Accra, Ghana with daily flights from May 8th. United’s existing seasonal service between New York-Newark and Cape Town will also become year-round starting June 5, 2022, pending government approval.
