On Tuesday (January 24, 2023), SWISS announced that as they conclude their 20th anniversary, they will name 20 of their Airbus A220-100s and A220-300s after popular Swiss tourist areas and resorts. The special action will be done in collaboration with Switzerland Tourism, and the destinations have been selected via a competition. Each of the top three winners will be honored with a full naming ceremony in one of SWISS’ hangars. Once named, the aircraft will help publicize Switzerland’s diverse tourist landscapes throughout the carrier’s network. Last December, SWISS and Switzerland Tourism jointly ran a competition, inviting Swiss tourist destinations to submit presentations on why they should be selected. The resulting winners were selected by a SWISS judging panel out of 50 entries, based on originality, creativity, and their authentic connection to SWISS.

In today’s announcement, SWISS’ Head of Strategic Communications & Content Creation, Anja Beeler, said,

“We received so many outstanding and original entries, and it was far from easy to select our 20 winners. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our participants for all their creative contributions. And we’re really looking forward to carrying the names of all the varied and unique winning Swiss tourist areas and resorts on our aircraft out into the world.”

Three of the 20 winning destinations were selected by the social media community through a worldwide online poll, namely Bad Zurzach (AG), Nendaz (VS) and Viamala (GR). Each of these destinations will enjoy their own physical aircraft naming ceremony in a SWISS hangar during 2023, with two in Zurich and one in Geneva.
