In addition to training new pilots, SWISS has opened recruiting to trained first officers with or without a current type rating over the next few years. With training paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative will help the carrier maintain adequate flight deck crew.
On Wednesday (March 29, 2023), Swiss International Airlines (SWISS) announced that in addition to training new ab initio pilots, they will also be recruiting trained first officers with or without a type rating over the next few years. As training was paused during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the new recruiting efforts will ensure the airline maintains adequate numbers of cockpit personnel. Recruitment for experienced first offers is scheduled to commence in Autumn 2023.
In Wednesday’s announcement, SWISS’ Head of Flight Operations, Stefan-Kenan Scheib, said,
“We are looking forward to welcoming experienced first officers, too, to our pilot ranks. With our ab initio pilot training taking about two years, we need to recruit such already-trained first officers as well to ensure that we can maintain stable flight operations in the medium term.”
In addition to maturity, loyalty, integrity, an impeccable character background, strong social skills and leadership potential, future SWISS pilots must meet further employment conditions as outlined here (in German). Preference will be given to experienced applicants with a current Airbus type rating. Applicants who successfully pass the corresponding assessment will be offered a permanent contract of employment as a SWISS First Officer. All further required training will be conducted at Lufthansa Aviation Training in Glattbrugg.
