On Thursday, Miramar, Florida-based LCC Spirit Airlines announced that they will be opening a new nearly 49,000 square foot Operational Control Center (OCC) in Williamson County, near Nashville, Tennessee by early 2021. The move coincides with the carrier’s previous announcement that they would relocate their Miramar, Florida headquarters in Western Broward County east to Dania Beach, near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The move is designed to insulate the carrier’s operations from hurricane and tropical storm prone southeastern Florida. Over 240 Spirit Team Members will relocate to the new Tennessee OCC, where the airline expects to add 100 new jobs over the next five years. In Thursday’s announcement, Spirit Airlines’ CEO Ted Christie said,

“We are committed to our South Florida community, and Florida’s Hometown Airline will continue to create new jobs by supporting our international network and fleetwide training needs from our Broward County home. At the same time, we look forward to building on our plans for future expansion and protecting our growing 24/7 operation by starting this new chapter in Nashville.”

Spirit’s OCC controls around-the-clock operations for over 650 daily flights across the US, Latin America and the Caribbean. OCC Team Members perform critical operational functions such as flight dispatch, crew scheduling, maintenance control, aircraft routing, air traffic control coordination as well as guest solutions. Spirit selected the “Music City” for their new OCC after a nationwide search due to geographic location, business climate, growing aviation sector and the quality of life available to team members. More than 700 of Spirit’s Miramar, Florida team members will also be moving to the carrier’s new $250M Dania Beach, FL HQ in 2022. Additionally, the airline plans on hiring 225 new team members at their future Dania Beach HQ to support their growing domestic and international operations.
