Southwest Airlines’ Employee Headcount Exceeds Pre-Pandemic Levels

Southwest Airlines has reached a major milestone, growing their full-time equivalent (FTE) headcount to over 61,000 team members, more than the carrier had in 2019 before the pandemic.

On Friday (July 15, 2022), Southwest Airlines announced a major milestone, as the carrier’s full-time equivalent (FTE) headcount reaches over 61,000, more than in the 2019 pre-pandemic period. The company’s hiring spree has been accomplished with the goal of adding resources and increasing reliability for customers and employees during the busy summer 2022 travel season and beyond. Southwest expects to add and train thousands more employees throughout the year, including pilots, cabin crew, ground operations, technical operations and customer support & services personnel.


In Friday’s announcement, Southwest Airlines’ Senior Vice President – People, Learning and Development, Elizabeth Bryant, said,


Our recent hiring milestones represent incredible progress with aligning staffing to support our flight schedule, Customers and Employees. We’re proud of the 10,000 new Southwest Employees that we’ve welcomed since January and hiring and training will remain a focus throughout 2022.”

Southwest offers a robust point-to-point network with a strong presence across leisure and business markets, and carried 130 million passengers in 2019. During peak travel seasons, the airline operates more than 4,000 daily departures to over 100 destinations across the U.S. and 10 additional countries. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, based on the number of originating passengers boarded, Southwest has been the largest U.S. domestic carrier since 2003.
