SAS will launch new service to New York-Newark from both Aalborg and Gothenburg starting April 2023. The routes will be operated three times weekly with an Airbus A321LR.
On Wednesday (December 21, 2022), SAS announced the launch of new service from Aalborg and Gothenburg to New York-Newark (EWR) starting April 27, 2023. Both routes will operate three times weekly with a 157-seat Airbus A321LR (Long Range) configured with 22 Business Class, 12 Plus and 123 Go seats. The aircraft cabin features mood lighting and Wi-Fi, and every seat is equipped with IFE screens, PC power and/or USB ports. As part of SAS’ ongoing fleet renewal and commitment to sustainability, the A321LR offers a reduction in emissions of between 15 and 18 percent compared to similar previous generation aircraft.
In Wednesday’s announcement, SAS’ EVP and Chief Commercial Officer – Network and Revenue Management, Erik Westman, said,
“As part of SAS’ strategy to strengthen the regional offering in Scandinavia, we are pleased to add intercontinental routes from Gothenburg and Aalborg. We see a demand from secondary cities and are delighted to connect even more parts of the world. The Airbus A321 Long Range is a slightly smaller long-distance aircraft and perfect in size for servicing the regional markets. Having a comfortable way of traveling with fewer stops to exciting cities such as New York, is something we believe will be highly valued by our travelers.”
The new routes complement the carrier’s four existing New York routes, expanding SAS’ offer to New York to five daily flights. Inbound customers to Aalborg and Gothenburg will also enjoy regions that offer a range of tourist activities, and the cities are also home to many companies with international reach, making the route relevant for both leisure and business travelers.
SAS is the leading airline in Scandinavia, normally carrying over 30 million passengers annually from its main hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm to 125 destinations in Europe, the US and Asia (pre-pandemic figures). The company has targeted a reduction in carbon emissions by 25 percent by 2025, compared to 2005 levels, and hopes to transition to 100% biofuel for domestic flights by 2030. SAS also offers ground handling services, technical maintenance and cargo services. The carrier is a founding member of the Star Alliance, which is celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2022.
