On Thursday (August 17, 2023), Rex announced the launch of their inaugural flight between Melbourne and Hobart with the touchdown of flight ZL709 in Hobart, which is now the sixth capital city on the airline’s expanding domestic network. The arriving flight was greeted with a celebration attended by a number of dignitaries, including Tasmanian Premier and Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Jeremy Rockliff MP, Rex Deputy Chairman, the Hon. John Sharp AM, Hobart Airport Chief Executive Officer, Norris Carter and Tourism Tasmania Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Clark. The new route will be operated with a Boeing 737-800NG, providing an additional 128,000 seats between the two cities annually. Hobart is Rex’s fourth Tasmanian destination, joining existing service to Devonport, Burnie and King Island.
In Thursday’s announcement, Rex’s Deputy Chairman, the Hon. John Sharp AM, said,
“With Economy fares from Hobart starting at $79 and Business class seats from $349 it’s understandable they are being snapped up by those looking for an alternative to the sky-high prices and unreliable services being offered by other airlines. All our flights to the weekend are practically full. This is why more and more Australians are enjoying our trademark reliability and affordable fares delivered with country-style hospitality.”
Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional and domestic airline. The carrier operates a fleet of 58 Saab 340s and eight Boeing 737-800NGs, serving 57 destinations throughout all Australian states. The Rex Group also includes wholly-owned subsidiaries Pel-Air Aviation (an airfreight aeromedical and charter operator) as well as two pilot academies, Australia Airline Pilot Academy in Wagga Wagga and Ballarat. Rex is also a 50 percent shareholder of National Jet Express (NJE), a premier Fly-in-Fly-Out (FIFO) charter and freight operator.
