On Monday (March 15, 2021), Qantas announced the launch of new direct service between Newcastle in the Hunter region and the Victorian capital of Melbourne. QantasLink will operate 12 weekly return flights on the route with 125-seat Boeing 717-200s, adding over 30,000 seats between the cities each week. The new route complements the carrier’s existing service between Newcastle and Brisbane, with the service progressively increasing by the end of March to a total of 24 weekly return flights.

In today’s announcement, QantasLink’s CEO, John Gissing, said,

“We know Australians want to travel so we’ve been looking for opportunities to support new routes where there is demand and help deliver a boost for local businesses. These new services will bring more Victorians to Newcastle as well as the Port Stephens region and the world class Hunter Valley wineries. We expect this service will also be popular with our corporate travellers based in Newcastle. Flights are available at peak times in both directions and customers will enjoy the benefits of our premium service, including complimentary food and drinks, baggage and lounge access before they fly out.”

As previously announced, Qantas allows unlimited flight changes through at least February 2022, for flights booked through at least April 2021, without change fees, though a fare difference may apply.
