PLAY has signed an agreement with China Aircraft Leasing Group (CALC) for the lease of two new Airbus A320neos. The aircraft will be delivered to PLAY next week and will then be fitted and painted according to the airline’s specifications.
On Thursday (November 18, 2021), Icelandic carrier PLAY announced the signing of a lease agreement with China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Limited (CALC) for two new Airbus A320neos. Play will receive the new aircraft next week, and they will then be painted and configured to the carrier’s specifications. In September 2021, PLAY signed an agreement with GECAS for three A320neos and one A321NX aircraft. Those aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between fall 2022 and spring 2023. The eco-friendly A320neo Family aircraft are well suited for PLAY’s operations with the flexibility and range to reach markets on both sides of the Atlantic.
In Thursday’s announcement, PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jónsson, said,
“We are delighted to add additional aircraft to the PLAY fleet. We are consciously including environmental variables in our decision making and the addition of these fuel-efficient aircraft will help us meet our growth objectives as we look forward to the opportunities ahead.”
Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights between Iceland and Europe, and has future plans to offer transatlantic long-haul service between Europe and North America. The airline launched their inaugural passenger revenue flight on Thursday, June 24, 2021, with service between Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and London Stansted (STN). PLAY’s fleet of Airbus A321neos currently connects customers to 16 European destinations. Next spring, the carrier will have added new aircraft to their fleet, prior to the launch of low-cost transatlantic flights to North America.
