On Monday (November 9, 2020), the Lufthansa Group announced that Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines guests now have an option for greater planning security for their travel plans with new supplemental COVID-19 travel insurance options. The optional packages complement existing travel insurance and offer benefits such as coverage of COVID-19 medical costs, quarantine compensation and travel cancellation and emergency repatriation. The new supplemental insurance is underwritten by AIG Europe S.A. and allows customers two options, namely ‘Travel Care’ and ‘Travel Care Plus.’

The Travel Care option includes a compensation payment in the event a passenger must go into COVID-19 related quarantine at their destination. This coverage also includes travel cancellation and trip interruption insurance. The ‘Travel Care Plus’ option also covers COVID-19 medical expenses, should a passenger become infected while traveling as well as emergency medical repatriation. The insurance is now available for guests residing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and can be booked via any of the carriers’ direct sales channels. The new insurance options complement the Lufthansa Group's existing flexible rebooking policy and the elimination of rebooking fees.
