On Thursday (December 3, 2020), Lufthansa announced welcome news as they have seen strong booking growth for the upcoming holidays, in some cases a 400 percent improvement. The company will respond by adding new service and increasing frequencies from Frankfurt and Munich. Lufthansa has seen a sharp rise in intercontinental and intra-European bookings for the Christmas and New year travel season, with a 400 percent increase in overseas bookings last week as well as to Southern and Northern Europe compared to the previous week. Some of the destinations most in demand include South Africa (Cape Town and Johannesburg), Namibia (Windhoek), the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Mediterranean and Northern Finland. In Thursday’s announcement, Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Executive Board Member, Harry Hohmeister, said,

“The longing to travel is great worldwide. As soon as travel restrictions fall, we see a significant increase in bookings. This is especially true for the vacation season around Christmas and New Year. Taking into account the highest hygiene and safety standards, we want to fulfill our guests' vacation dreams wherever possible. In the coming weeks, we will therefore continue to flexibly adjust our flight schedules to demand at short notice.”

Lufthansa is responding to the increasing demand by adding new flights to and from European destinations and increasing frequencies on high demand routes. The airline now flies from Frankfurt and Munich to nearly every Canary island and will offer non-stop service from Frankfurt to La Palma and Fuerteventura for the first time starting December 19, 2020. Lufthansa has also added Seville and Palermo back into their schedule from Frankfurt and Munich, while holidaymakers will also enjoy service to Heraklion on the island of Crete from Frankfurt.

While the classic sunny Mediterranean destinations are always popular, Lufthansa is also adding ‘snow-assured’ destinations back into their schedule with service to the spectacular ski resorts in Northern Finland. From Frankfurt, Lufthansa has increased frequencies to Majorca, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Madeira, Malta, Larnaca (Cyprus) and Faro (Algarve), while frequencies have been increased from Munich to Majorca, Faro, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Naturally, Lufthansa’s classic routes will also be reintroduced into the schedule with service from Frankfurt to popular destinations such as Dublin, Gdansk, Salzburg, Turin and Naples and from Munich to Paris, Madrid, Helsinki, Athens, Rome, Oslo, Warsaw and Lisbon.
