On Friday (June 16, 2023), Lufthansa Cargo announced that starting July 7, 2023, they will transfer all Boeing 777 Freighter service from Mexico City International Airport (MEX) to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU). The move follows a decree from the Mexican government prohibiting freighters from flying into MEX due to capacity constraints. During the current summer season, Lufthansa Cargo will offer six 777 Freighter connections between Frankfurt (FRA) and NLU. Lufthansa passenger aircraft will continue to provide belly hold cargo capacity to Mexico City Airport (MEX) with seven weekly Boeing 747-8 connections from Frankfurt and three Airbus A350 flights from Munich (MUC).

In Friday’s announcement, Lufthansa Cargo’s Director, Sales & Handling – Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Central America and the Caribbean, Frank Nozinsky, said,

“As part of the necessary relocation of freighter flights to Mexico City's northeastern airport, we have successfully established both the import and export processes on site to our usual high standards in a very short time, as well as set up a fast and reliable nighttime truck transport service for freight shipments between NLU and MEX.”

Also commenting on the changes to cargo service to Mexico, Lufthansa Cargo’s CEO, Ashwin Bhat, added,

“Mexico City is a cargo destination in high demand. We are therefore very pleased to be present at both international airports together with Lufthansa Airlines and to offer our customers seamless connections for their cargo shipments here together with our warehouse partners.”
