IndiGo Places Record Order for 500 Airbus A320 Family Aircraft

IndiGo has today placed a firm order for 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, setting the record for the largest single purchase agreement in the history of commercial aviation. The agreement expands IndiGo’s total Airbus orders to 1,330 aircraft.

On Monday (June 19, 2023), form the Paris Air Show, Airbus announced that IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has placed a firm order for 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The order sets the record for the largest single purchase agreement in the history of commercial aviation. With the new order, IndiGo expands their total orders with Airbus to 1,330 aircraft, establishing the carrier as the world’s biggest A320 Family customer. The historic purchase agreement was signed by IndiGo’s Promoter and Managing Director, Rahul Bhatia, IndiGo’s Chairman and Non-Executive Director, Dr. Venkataramani Sumantran, the airline’s CEO Pieter Elbers, Airbus’ CEO, Guillaume Faury, and Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International, Christian Scherer.


In Monday’s announcement, IndiGo’s Chief Executive Officer, Pieter Elbers, said,


“It is difficult to overstate the significance of IndiGo’s new historic order for 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. An order book now of almost 1000 aircraft well into the next decade, enables IndiGo to fulfil its mission to continue to boost economic growth, social cohesion and mobility in India. At IndiGo, we take pride in being India’s preferred airline for connectivity in and with India; and by doing so, being one of the leading airlines in the world. This order strongly reaffirms IndiGo’s belief in the growth of India, in the A320 Family and in our strategic partnership with Airbus.”


Also commenting on the record order, Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International, Christian Scherer, said,

“This landmark order marks a new chapter in Airbus and IndiGo’s relationship that is democratising affordable air travel for millions of people in the world’s fastest growing aviation market. It is also a resounding endorsement of the A320 Family’s best-in-class operating economics that have been powering IndiGo’s growth for almost two decades. New Delhi, India-based IndiGo is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. Since taking delivery of their first A320neo in 2016, IndiGo’s A320neo Family operating fleet has grown into one of the world’s largest with 264 aircraft. The carrier’s fleet includes 162 A320neos, 79 A321neos, 21 A320ceos, and two A321 Freighters. The Airbus A320 Family is the world leader in the single aisle aircraft market. With the newest generation engines, Sharklets and enhanced aerodynamics, the A320neo delivers a reduction in fuel burn and emissions of at least 20 percent compared to previous generation aircraft. To date, the A320neo Family has won over 8,700 orders from 130 customers worldwide.
