IndiGo will make flights to Kathmandu safer and more efficient with the implementation of advanced navigation technology. The Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR) will enable pilots to navigate with precision the complex terrain in the area.

On Wednesday (September 4, 2024), IndiGo announced the launch of the Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR) advanced navigation initiative, designed to enable pilots to navigate with precision the complex terrain surrounding the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. IndiGo successfully operated the validation flight on Wednesday (September 4th), following the clearance received, in line with the provisional approval of DGCA. The RNP AR technology has been specifically engineered for airports situated in geographically challenging and high altitude airports, such as Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu.
In Wednesday’s announcement, IndiGo’s SVP – Flight Operations, Captain Ashim Mittra, said,
“We are proud to be the first Indian airline to implement the RNP AR procedure for operations into Kathmandu. With the implementation of the RNP AR flight procedure, IndiGo reinforces its dedication to leading the industry in aviation safety and operational efficiency, ensuring safer and more reliable skies for all travelers. This latest technological enhancement reflects IndiGo’s commitment to delivering safe and exceptional service as it continues to expand its network.”
Surrounded by the Himalayas, landing in Kathmandu has been notoriously challenging for pilots, especially during adverse weather conditions. The implementation of the RNP AR system will now enable aircraft to adhere to predetermined flight paths with precise accuracy, helping mitigate the risks posed by the mountainous landscape. With IndiGo’s adoption of RNP AR procedures for all flights into Kathmandu, passenger safety will be enhanced substantially. The new advanced navigation capability supports continuous descent approaches, resulting in optimized airspace usage, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions.
