IndiGo Appoints Pieter Elbers as New Chief Executive Officer

Indigo has appointed airline industry veteran Pieter Elbers as the carrier’s new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Mr. Rono Dutta who is retiring on September 30, 2022. Mr. Elbers has served as Chief Executive Officer for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines since 2014.

On Wednesday (May 18, 2022), IndiGo announced the appointment of Pieter Elbers as the airline’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective on or before October 1st, 2022, succeeding Mr. Rono Dutta (72) who is retiring on September 30th. Mr. Elbers (52) has been with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines since 1992, serving in many leadership roles including SVP – Network and Alliances, Chief Operating Officer, and as the carrier’s CEO from 2014. He was born in Schiedam in the Netherlands and has a Bachelor’s degree in Logistics Management and a Master’s degree in Business and Economics.


In Wednesday’s announcment, IndiGo’s Managing Director, Mr. Rahul Bhatia, said, “We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Mr. Pieter Elbers as the Chief Executive Officer of the Company. India promises to be the last bastion of ginormous growth globally and given Mr. Elbers’ deep understanding of the business, his legendary leadership qualities coupled with his energy and passion, we are ever so confident that under his stewardship, IndiGo will play a pivotal role in this growth opportunity.


“The Board of Directors and I would like to thank Rono for effectively leading our business for almost four years with a steady hand through what has been the most turbulent period in the airline’s history and aviation globally.”


Commenting on his pending retirement and successor, IndiGo’s current CEO, Mr. Rono Dutta, said,


“I leave knowing that IndiGo is in the good custody of Mr. Elbers and that the future for IndiGo employees is secure and bright. I would like to thank all the employees at IndiGo for the kindness and affection they have shown me over the past four years. As I move forward to the next chapter of my life, I will look back with nostalgia, fondness, and a tinge of separation regret.”

In response to his appointment as IndiGo’s new CEO, Pieter Elbers, said,
