IndiGo Announces the Appointment of William ‘Willie’ Walsh as Chief Executive Officer

IndiGo has announced the appointment of airline industry veteran William ‘Willie’ Walsh as the carrier’s new CEO effective on or before August 3, 2026.

On Tuesday (March 31, 2026), InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) announced the appointment of William ‘Willie’ Walsh as the Chief Executive Officer, subject to Regulatory approvals. Mr. Walsh’s tenure at IATA comes to a close on July 31st, and he is expected to join IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026. He is currently the Director General of IATA, and was formerly CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group, a holding company which owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling).
In Tuesday’s announcement, IndiGo’s Chairman, Mr. Vikram Singh Mehta, said,

His appointment will mark a new chapter for IndiGo, as it continues its journey in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world.”
Also commenting on the appointment of Mr. Walsh as CEO, IndiGo’s Managing Director, Rahul Bhatia, said,

IndiGo’s incoming CEO, Willie Walsh, added,

Mr. Walsh is widely admired as one of the most successful, respected, influential and long-lasting leaders in modern aviation history. He is known for his pragmatic and resolute management style, effective complex restructuring, and successful mergers and acquisitions. Willie Walsh’s distinguished career highlights span from his role as a pilot, COO and then CEO of Aer Lingus, (2000-2005), CEO of British Airways, (2005-2011) and CEO of IAG (2011-2020), to his appointment as Director General of IATA.
In his new role, Mr. Walsh will be responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the airline with a focus on transformational initiatives to strengthen the operational performance, advance the company’s network and commercial strategy while enhancing customer experience. He will work closely with the Board and the leadership team to position IndiGo as it scales up to the next phase of growth.
