On Thursday (April 7, 2022), Iberia announced the signing of a new marketing agreement with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. As part of the initiative, the carrier has unveiled an Airbus A320, registration EC-ILS which features a special ‘Discover Puerto Rico’ decal. The 180-seat aircraft will promote the Caribbean island as it flies across nearly 100 European destinations. This year, Iberia celebrates 73 years of service to Puerto Rico and has increased frequencies to the popular leisure destination to five weekly flights. The presentation of the aircraft on Thursday was attended by the Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro R. Pierluisi, Iberia’s Director of Clients, Transformation and Technology, Gabriel Perdiguero and other dignitaries.

In Thursday’s announcment, Iberia’s Director of Customers, Transformation and Technology, Gabriel Perdiguero, said,

“Our commitment to Puerto Rico is total. Iberia is the only European airline that flies direct to the island and this summer we will increase flights to reach five weekly frequencies, above the capacity we offered before the pandemic, a reason for joy that joins the celebration of the 73rd anniversary of the first flight with the beloved Caribbean country.”

Also commenting on the marketing collaboration, Puerto Rico’s Governor, Pedro R. Peirluisi, said,

“Puerto Rico and Spain have a great cultural and commercial relationship. This agreement will be of great promotional benefit to our Island and is another of the initiatives that we are working on in the Government to increase our presence in Europe. Iberia is a world-class airline and for years has connected Puerto Rico with Spain directly. Now, by having five weekly direct flights, beginning this summer, we are reinforcing that relationship and preparing to increase the number of passengers between both destinations, which will have positive effects on our economy.”

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company’s Executive Director, Carlos Mercado Santiago, added,

“The expansion of air access is key to the development of the tourism industry and to maximize its contribution to the treasury, while promoting the creation of companies and jobs for the benefit of all. We are proud to have the support of our Iberia partners, an airline that continues to bet on Puerto Rico as a world-class destination in the Caribbean. After the federal restrictions that paused flights on the important direct route between the Island and Europe were lifted last July, Iberia has increased the availability of seats on trips to Puerto Rico, exceeding the capacity they offered prior to the pandemic.”
