On Monday (April 19, 2021), Iberia announced an increased commitment to Cantabria with twice-daily service between Madrid and Santander from the end of May 2021. The added flights represent a 30 percent frequency on the route which will be serviced with Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum CRJ 1000s. Since July 2020, Iberia has gradually increased capacity at Santander Airport, growing from three to eleven weekly flights and in collaboration with Turismo de Cantabria, continues to support tourism to the region. To celebrate the expanded service, Iberia is offering flights between Madrid and Santander for only €55 each way with roundtrip purchase.

In Monday’s announcement, Iberia’s Director of Institutional Agreements, Víctor Moneo, said,

“In Iberia we are committed to Cantabria, and we have done so throughout this year, even in the worst peak of the pandemic, always maintaining minimal connectivity with Santander. We are absolutely confident that traffic will be reactivated little by little, that is why we increase the offer and offer a very competitive product to boost tourism in the region and the international projection of Cantabria.”

Also commenting on the airline’s commitment to the region, Cantabria’s Minister of Industry and Tourism, Javier López Marcano, added,

“For Cantabria it is essential to guarantee good connections with Madrid, both from the tourist point of view and, especially, for business trips. It is important for the Cantabrian business fabric to have options to be able to travel during the day and it also benefits us that the range of schedules opens up because this represents a step in the internationalization of the region by allowing connection with other medium and long-haul flights to other countries from Madrid”

In July 2020, after the first pandemic-related lockdown ended, Iberia resumed activity at Santander Airport with three weekly flights. By last September, the carrier offered daily service between Madrid and Santander and since January 2021, has operated eleven weekly flights.
