Due to increasing sick leave resulting from the spread of the COVID-19 omicron variant, Finnair will reduce their February traffic program by 20 percent. The carrier will also delay the launch of new Dallas service until March 27th, and move Nagoya service to summer.
On Wednesday (January 12, 2022), Finnair announced various schedule changes due to the impact of the COVID-19 omicron variant and associated increase in sick leave among staff. The carrier will reduce their February flying program by around 20 percent, while the launch of new Dallas service will be moved from February until March 27, 2022. Additionally, the start of service to Nagoya and increased frequencies to Osaka will be delayed until the summer 2022 season. The majority of canceled flights are on routes where Finnair operates multiple daily flights to destinations such as Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Paris and Rome, so many customers will be offered an alternative same-day flight. Finnair will also reduce frequencies to Singapore to twice weekly, and service to Hong Kong to three weekly flights.
In Wednesday’s announcement, Finnair’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ole Orvér, said,
“Staff sick leave is now significantly impacting Finnair and airports in Finland as well as throughout the world. We aim to meet these resourcing challenges through the cancellation of flights, to avoid last-minute changes and better manage our customers’ expectations. This will give customers more time to prepare for flight schedule changes and adjust their travel plans if needed. We are sorry for the inconvenience and disruption this may cause to our customers. However, reducing our traffic programme is necessary to better offer a smooth travel experience in the face of the expected resource challenges.”
Finnair offers exceptional booking flexibility, allowing customers unlimited fee-free travel date changes until February 28, 2022.
