Deutsche Lufthansa AG Appoints Remco Steenbergen as New Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Steenbergen will resume his new role as CFO on January 1, 2020, with a contract through December 31, 2023. The company’s Chairman of the Executive Board, Carsten Spohr, took over as interim CFO after the resignation of Ulrik Svensson and Thorsten Dirks.

Today (November 11, 2020), Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Supervisory Board announced the appointment of Remco Steenbergen as the company’s Chief Financial Officer starting January 1, 2020, with a contract through December 31, 2023. The position has been held on an interim basis by the Group’s Chairman of the Executive Board, Carsten Spohr, since the resignation of Ulrik Svensson and Thorsten Dirks. With the new appointment, the company will re-establish their finance division which will include essential oversight in controlling, risk management, corporate finance, accounting and balance sheets, taxes, purchasing and M&A activity. In Wednesday’s announcement, Lufthansa AG’s Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Karl-Ludwig Kley, said,

“With Remco Steenbergen, we will have a distinguished financial expert with extensive experience in the capital markets joining us as the new Lufthansa Group CFO. Remco Steenbergen brings with him excellent financial expertise from various companies as well as industries and has also impressed the Supervisory Board with his personality. Especially now, when the pandemic is having such serious consequences for air travel, an internationally experienced and well-respected CFO is more important than ever for Lufthansa Group: not only to overcome the current crisis but also for the coming years, when we have to – and want to – pay back government stabilization funds.”


Also commenting on Wednesday’s appointment, Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Chairman of the Executive Board, Carsten Spohr, added,


“Remco Steenbergen will be an excellent addition to our management team. We look forward to working together with him closely on a professional as well as on a personal level. He is taking on a major responsibility in our company at a particularly challenging time. I am convinced that together we will master the tasks ahead of us and expand our leading role in the industry.”


Remco Steenburgen (52) most recently served as the CFO of the Barry Callebaut Group based in Zurich. Mr. Steenbergen is a Dutch citizen and previously worked for Philips and KPMG. During his career, he has held various financial management roles at numerous firms in the Netherlands, the UK, Taiwan, Belgium, Ireland, the US and Switzerland. Mr. Steenbergen holds and MBA from the Institute for Management and Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland as well as a postdoctoral degree in accounting from Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He is married and the father of three children.
