On Wednesday (January 18, 2023), Airbus announced that Delta Air Lines has firmed an order for 12 additional A220-300s, bringing their firm order total for A220 Family aircraft to 119 jets, including 45 A220-100s and 74 A220-300s. To date, Delta has reordered the A220 four times, and is currently the largest customer and operator of the aircraft Family. The carrier took delivery of their first A220 in October 2018, becoming the U.S. launch customer. Delta currently operates a fleet of 415 Airbus aircraft including 59 A220s, 266 A320 Family, 62 A330s and 28 A350-900s.

In today’s order announcement, Delta Air Lines’ Vice President of Fleet, Kristen Bojko, said,

“These 12 additional A220 aircraft will help power our increasingly streamlined fleet while also providing our customers with the elevated in-flight experience they’ve come to expect from Delta.”

Also commenting on Delta’s incremental A220-300 order, Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, Christian Scherer, said,

“Delta Air Lines was the U.S. launch customer for the A220 and this fourth reorder in just four years by a leading carrier as Delta is a most gratifying endorsement. The aircraft is currently connecting Delta passengers on more than 100 routes at 25 percent less fuel and CO2 emissions. If you want to connect today and tomorrow, you can’t do any better!”

The Airbus A220 Family is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market, and combines state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest generation GTF engines. The aircraft delivers a 50 percent reduction in noise footprint, and a 50 percent lower NOx emissions versus the industry standard. Airbus has delivered 246 A220s to 16 airlines operating on four continents. The versatile A220 is suited for regional as well as long distance routes. Thus far, over 70 million passengers have enjoyed the A220 experience. The global fleet is currently flying on over 823 routes to 300 destinations. At December 31, 2022, more nearly 30 customers have ordered close to 800 A220 Family aircraft, confirming its breakthrough in the small single-aisle market.
