On Friday (February 24, 2023), Bonza celebrated their inaugural flight between Townsville and Rockhampton, with flight AB927 touching down in Rockhampton today. In addition to three weekly flights between Townsville and Rockhampton, Bonza will launch service to Rockhampton from Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Melbourne. Cairns flights will operate twice weekly with one-way fares from $59 per person, while flights to Rockhampton from Sunshine Coast and Melbourne will operate three times weekly with one-way fares from $49 and $89, respectively.

In today’s announcement, Bonza’s CEO, Tim Jordan, who traveled on the inaugural flight, said,

“We are very humbled to travel with some of our first ever customers between Townsville to Rocky today. We’ve always said our competition is the couch and the car. Now, we’re here to provide affordable travel to the many and not the few. We know today is a good day for the tourism industry in Central and Far North Queensland - as well as friends and family who want to see one another without an eight hour drive or a flight that connects through major centres.”

Also commenting on Bonza’s new service, Rockhampton Region’s Mayor, Tony Williams, said,

“We are so thrilled to finally welcome Bonza to sunny CQ, and to be able to directly connect more travellers to the Rockhampton Region is a massive win. Residents and visitors have been calling out for more flight options. We are very excited to now make it possible for people to travel on a budget to previously un-serviced routes. This partnership is going to benefit many sectors of our community. We are looking forward to not only welcoming friends and relatives to the region but showcasing our beautiful community as one of the most livable regions in Australia.”

Queensland Airport Limited’s CEO, Amelia Evans, added,

“Two of Bonza’s first routes are connections through Townsville Airport, which shows the importance of North Queensland and the opportunity this region presents, mirroring our own confidence in future growth for the airport. We expect the new Townsville-Rockhampton route will be particularly popular with friends and family travellers, looking to connect with loved ones more easily.”

Bonza is Australia’s new, and only independent low-cost carrier (LCC), enabling Australians to explore more of their own backyard at low prices. The airline currently operates a fleet of five brand new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, which will grow to eight by the end of the first year of operations. Bonza’s initial route map includes 27 routes to 17 destinations. Over 90 percent of Bonza routes are not served by any airline, and 96 percent are not served by a low-cost carrier. The lowest fares are now available for booking on the FlyBonza App.
