On Thursday (November 10, 2022), Avelo Airlines announced that they will open their fifth base at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in February 2023. From February 2nd, the carrier will add nonstop service from RDU to six popular destinations in Florida including Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Orlando (MCO), Sarasota-Bradenton (SRQ), Tampa (TPA) and West Palm Beach (PBI). Avelo will become the only airline offering direct service from RDU to Fort Myers, Sarasota and West Palm Beach. Celebrating the launch of the new routes, Avelo is offering introductory one-way fares (including taxes and fees) between RDU and Orlando, and fares to the other five Florida destinations from $39. To qualify for the low fares, tickets must be booked by November 16, 2022 for travel completed by April 30, 2023.
In Thursday’s announcement, Avelo Airlines’ Chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, said,
“RDU, say hello to more growth! Our Triangle-area Customers tell us they have loved flying Avelo since we took flight at RDU last May. Our six new nonstop Florida routes are just the beginning. Establishing RDU as Avelo’s fifth base will enable us to bring affordable and convenient nonstop access to even more destinations. We appreciate the warm reception Avelo has received from Raleigh, Durham and surrounding areas – we look forward to bolstering our presence in this vibrant community with the opening of Avelo’s new base here in February.”
Also commenting on Avelo’s new base and network expansion at RDU, Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority’s President and CEO, Michael Landguth, said,
“The Research Triangle has long been recognized as one of the best places in the country to live, work and visit. We are excited to see Avelo expand their footprint at RDU and create exciting new job opportunities at the airport.”
Avelo’s new Raleigh-Durham base will open on February 16, 2023 with one based Boeing 737NG, and a second later on during the first quarter. Over the next two years, the carrier plans on basing between five and seven aircraft at RDU. Supporting the new base, Avelo anticipates creating at least 50 jobs during H1 2023 at RDU, including Airport Customer Service, Pilots, Cabin Crew, Aircraft Technical Operations and Maintenance, and Supervisors.
With the addition of service between Raleigh-Durham and Orlando, Avelo expands their MCO network to 11 destinations, including Binghamton (New York), Dayton (Ohio), Dubuque (Iowa), Lexington (Kentucky), Wilmington (Delaware), Wilmington (North Carolina), and Kalamazoo and Lansing (Michigan).
